A Comic Deconstruction of “Othello”
The wrongly accused and suffering wife of Shakespeare’s tragic Moor, Othello, Desdemona has long been viewed as the “victim of circumstance.” Pulitzer-winning playwright, Paula Vogel, introduces Desdemona, Bianca, and Emilia along with their lovers and husband. From love and sex to class, race, labor, privilege, friendship, rivalry, and everything in between, these three examine their lives and what they can make of them. With tongue-in-cheek humor, Vogel raises serious questions as to the role of women through the ages—Desdemona was far from the quivering naif we’ve all come to know.
